Fools Work Hard For Others
Potharaju Ravindra

Topic: Study: Self Development.

Review:
It is the desire to achieve freedom from the ‘Race of life’ that triggers the ‘process’ aimed at getting to this goal. This is not something that is arbitrary or illogical, but can be backed by sound facts and immense experience that motivates one further towards the realization of their goals.

Steps involved in the process - It being a quantifiable process, one can very well take a methodical approach to it. This involves:

1. Setting up of the goals themselves
2. Ignite the spark within you
3. Edge on
4. Reflect back
5. Re-visit
6. Be free

These steps are in no way a ‘rule of the book’ and need not be followed in the their strict order, nevertheless the underlying process is best met if such a systematic approach is taken.

The books set in a story mode right from the start does remain in the story telling mode till the end. Nothing great about the book and the financial calculations. I am not a great sucker for math but if u torture data long enough, it can be made to say anything..so it is all crap call that if u cut ur expenses by x % then the way to financial freedom is y years away blah blah blah..

No one became a millionaire or a rich man so to speak by saving money, at least I havent seen one and even if one does get richer by that menthod then what is the use. I will have more pleasure in life by driving Santro with my family with zero bank balance at the age of 28 or 29 than driving(if i am physically fit enough) a Sonata at 58. No one cherishes and chases that kind of dreams anymore.

On the inspiring content this book scores a duck. In providing insights on how to start on your own and have peace and money in life , the book fails to deliver..any average user with a fair bit of IQ can figure out that writer is so short of content that he has used lots and loads of cartoons and sketches and a font that can enable the reader to keep the book on the bonnet and still read it from the backseat of the car.

The only person who has not worked hard for others and made a fool out of people buying into this book is the writer himself. I can merit him on that to say the least.

Rating: Good.

Topic: Misc: Teamwork.
ISBN Number: 0-688-17036-6

Review:
High Five! The Magic of Working together is a must read. Grounded in one of Ken and Sheldon’s new acronyms, P.U.C.K. and the P.E.R.F.O.R.M. model in our ‘Building High Performing Teams’ process, this book parallels the quality of any in the field of teamwork / self development.

High Five! combines the spellbinding charm of a timeless parable with cutting-edge information about why teams are important and what individuals and organizations can do to build successful ones.

Through the story of Alan Foster, a workplace one-man band, High Five! identifies the four key ingredients of winning teams. Although Alan is an effective producer, he is unwilling to share the spotlight by partnering on projects and is fired because, as his boss puts it, “Alan, we need good producers who are good team players, too.” It is a bitter pill for him to swallow.

While mulling over his disappointment, he takes his son to his grade-five hockey practice, where it is clear that his son’s team, the Riverbend Warriors, knows nothing about teamwork, either. When the team's two overworked coaches learn of Alan's plight, they persuade him to join their ranks, and he finds himself charged with teaching himself and the players the meaning of teamwork. With the help of a woman friend - a former girls’ basketball coach who has “won more high school basketball championships than anyone” - Alan and the Warriors learn the magic of teamwork and that “none of us is as smart as all of us.”

With its simple style and easy-to-follow techniques, High Five! is a must-read for anyone seeking to learn the value and power of teamwork.

Rating: Very Good.

Parenting: School and Age Debate [-3 -2 -1 before 1st Standard]

Parenting: School and Age Debate [-3 -2 -1 before 1st Standard]
[Written 14 November 2007]

Most first time parents ponder as to the ‘right’ age to start sending their wards to school. We were no different and we too went through this debate over and over at home and even while walking on our daily errands!!!

We figured a nice terminology (others may have thought of it already, but hope to make it more popular and more in use!!!) that could help potential school seeking parents eliminating initial confusion and help in deciding the actual school rather than other seemingly minor things:

“-3 -2 -1 before 1st Standard” - The ‘-3 -2 -1’ stands to denote the classes before 1st standard – this eliminates the confusion with different names used for lower entry classes in different schools and different mediums of education. Simply put ‘-1’ would be the class immediately preceding Std. 1 (which could be UKG, Sr. KG, M2 - As in Montessori Schools, or just KG, etc), ‘-2’ would be one before that (which could be LKG, Jr. KG, M1 - As in Montessori Schools, Nursery, etc) and likewise ‘-3’ would be one more before ‘-2’ (which could be Nursery or Pre-Nursery, Playschool, etc). There could also be a '-4' (which could be Little Nursery or Pre-Nursery, Playschool, Playgroup, etc) and then one can go on to extrapolate this to include even a ‘-5’ for say ‘Littleschool’ or ‘Babyschool’ classes that are now coming up in some of the newer crept up schools.

Simple!!! Isn’t it?

Then comes the age part - The rule of thumb to follow in this case would be that a child entering 1st Standard should fall between the age of 5.5 to 6.5 yrs (an age band that is valid throughout India and across different mediums - though some schools are strict that it should be 6+ at the start of the academic session in June) and then use the ‘-3 -2 -1’ terminology to work your way backwards and decide what is right for you little one!!!

PS:
a. Every parent should debate this when their time comes and enjoy this small joy of parenting, but hope people reading this post would benefit from our experience.
b. My personal advice would be not to be too finicky or disturbed if your child is some months here and there – by the time they complete 10th Standard (or equivalent), it all seems very trivial and doesn’t matter much!!!
c. The usual disclaimer applies - and nothing should be taken for granted without finding out from the actual schools of one's choice.
